The Inner & Outer Knowledge for Worship

Allah Most High says in the Qur’an “And I did not create the Jinn and mankind except to worship me”.  Thus, the purpose of our existence is only to worship Him, in the way He (Allah) wants us to.  We get this knowledge from the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, as understood and conveyed by the Scholars throughout the ages.

Knowledge of worship has both outer and inner forms such that each, affects the other. The outer form of knowledge, for instance, will not be accepted unless it is coupled with the inner, such as sincerity of intention – solely for Allah.

This course is a systematic course that addresses the essentials of knowledge (inward & outward) that every Muslim must have to validate worship acceptable to Allah.  It will be taught from the original classical Arabic which will be translated to English, and then to Bengali, making it attractive to a wider audience of different ethnicity and background.

A Course for Converts

Amongst the many issues and challenges Converts face, a sound Islamic education is perhaps the most important. Many, quite understandably, resort to online education at the expense of finding themselves potentially more confused. However, we are humans, and we have innate human tendencies and inclinations that encourages us to socialise and obtain information from ‘real’ people – face to face, from the ‘real’ (not virtual) world. This, I would argue, is the ideal and the most natural way to acquire knowledge as it directly addresses one’s personal, social, and emotional needs.

This is a systematic course designed for converts addressing their educational, as well as their social needs. The sessions will be personalised to suit the needs of the group and move at a pace manageable and enjoyable for all over some light refreshments.

We will be taking a holistic approach in understanding the religion by looking at the 3 main areas of the religion and examining the effects each has on the individual in relation to worship.

Teachers : Azmol Ali & Maryam Johnson

Start Date: Sunday 20th July 2025. Lessons will take place every Sundays thereafter.

Usool al-Hadith AKA Mustalah Hadith (Hadith Terminology)

Usool al-Hadith (The principles of Hadith) is the study of Hadith compilation, preservation, classification, terminology, and interpretation. It is through the Ahadith that the Sunnah of the Prophet is known, and for this reason, it is considered the second source of the Shariah after the Qur’an.

We will be going through the famous poem (“The Bayquniyyah”) composed by the Syrian Scholar Umar bn Muhammad bn Futuh Al-Bayquniy (d. 1080 Hijri), which is traditionally studied in the Muslim world by students of knowledge.

The poem outlines the fundamental principles Hadith Scholars use in a systematic way to determine whether a Hadith is accepted or rejected. The most important sections of the poem will be selected and explained, giving the student an insight to the depth and profundity of what this science entails, and an appreciation and respect for its scholars who are the inheritors of the Prophet. The knowledge obtained from this course should give the student greater clarity whenever they are confronted with Ahadith (that are usually thrown at them via social media) and help unite the Ummah through tolerance – accepting the views of others, Insha-Allah.

This course is particularly suited for students at intermediate level. I will accept absolute beginners with the condition that they are studious and willing to put the extra time in understanding the contents of the lesson.

Start Date: Sunday 2nd February 2025. Lessons will take place every Sundays before Ramadhan. The duration of each lesson is approximately 1 hour 15 minute. There will be no lessons during Ramadhan. Lessons shall resume two weeks after Ramadhan, iA.

Duration: Approximately 15 lessons.

Worshipping Allah with knowledge – A course on Fiqh

Allah says in the Qur’an:
قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ۗ إِنَّمَا يَتَذَكَّرُ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ {9}

Say: “Can they who know and they who do not know be deemed equal?” [But] only they who are endowed with insight keep this in mind! (Az-Zumar).

In this verse Allah Most High encourages us to learn. It is through knowledge that one knows how to worship his Lord the way He wants to be worshipped.

This course is an in-depth course on the Sacred Science of Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence). The literal meaning of Fiqh in Arabic is “Understanding”. The Messenger of Allah said in a sound narration:

مَن يُرِدِ اللَّهُ به خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ في الدِّينِ
Whoever Allah wants good for; He gives him understanding of the religion. (Bukhari & Muslim).

In the Shariah, the term ‘Fiqh’ is the human understanding of the Divine law of Allah and is derived primarily from the Qur’an and the Sunnah. The purpose of our existence is to worship Allah alone. It is through the subject of Fiqh that Muslims learn how to worship Allah. The Scholars of Fiqh are known as Fuqahaa. Whilst the Scholars of Hadith (Muhadditheen) ascertain whether a Hadith can be accepted or rejected (by adhering to certain principles within a rigorous system), the Fuqahaa utilise the knowledge of the Muhadditheen (alongside other tools) to help them deduce the Shariah ruling of a particular issue or matter at hand.

We will be learning the outer form of worship by going through 3 books:

1. Nur al-Idaah by the Egyptian Scholar Al-Allaama Al-Shurumbulaali (994-1069 Hijri). This is a famous book that is studied in both the Arab world (such as Syria), and in the Indian sub-continent (such as Pakistan).

2. Maraaqi al-Falah which is a commentary of the above book by the same author.

3. Haashia at-Tahtaawi which is a super commentary of the above by the Egyptian Scholar Al-Allaama Shaykh Ahmad bn Muhammad bn Ismail At-Tahtaawi (1181-1231 Hijri).

This is a specialised course which is particularly suited for advanced students, or students who had a good exposure to the Islamic sciences and/or attended some courses with various teachers. However, I will accept absolute beginners with the condition that they are studious and willing to put the extra time in understanding the contents of the lesson.

Start Date: Sunday 2nd February 2025. Lessons will take place every Sundays before Ramadhan. The duration of each lesson is approximately 1 hour 15 minute. There will be no lessons during Ramadhan. Lessons shall resume two weeks after Ramadhan, iA.

Duration: Approximately 1 year

Time: 7pm – 8:15pm
